Aerial surveillance to begin along Indo-Myanmar border amid violence in Manipur

As violence grips the northeastern state of Manipur, security forces will soon start conducting aerial surveillance along the Indo-Myanmar border in the state. According to defence sources, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be used to monitor the areas apart from physical vigils.

Defence sources told India Today this surveillance aims to address the new security dimension posed by Manipur valley-based insurgent groups residing in camps across the border, potentially hindering efforts to restore normalcy in the state.

In order to control the violence in the state, paramilitary forces have been deployed. Assam Rifles, stationed on the ground, has intensified its deployment posture, ensuring round-the-clock vigilance and border surveillance. To reinforce their efforts, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and army helicopters have been allocated for aerial surveillance in Manipur.

Since the early morning hours of Saturday, the Army has conducted multiple rounds of aerial surveillance using Cheetah Helicopters.

Tension has been brewing in Manipur ever since May 3, when a rally organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in Churachandpur district’s Torbung area turned violent. The state government suspended internet for five days and paramilitary forces have been deployed to control the violence.
